“These pieces signal how food serves as a vehicle for me to honour and cultivate multilinguality. Growing up in what is now called Canada, my parents chose to primarily speak English with me, despite the fact that my father's first language is Arabic, and my mother's is Greek. However, in spite of this, their interactions with food - including recipes, ingredients, and customs - were regularly expressed in their first languages. To me, this choice indicated the interconnectedness of food and their cultural identities, thereby necessitating the use of correct terminology and expressions to signal this connection. Though I am neither fluent in Arabic or Greek, my interactions with traditional ingredients and culinary customs remind me of the multilinguality I aspire to, while also providing me with me with a means of retaining and reclaiming my own identities.”
